What Happens During the Building Permit Process?

Project review — We review your proposed project and discuss the information needed to assess the building permit pathway.

Documentation assessment — Plans and supporting documents are assessed against applicable Victorian building requirements, including the Building Act, Building Regulations and National Construction Code.

Permit stage — Where the requirements are satisfied, the building permit process can proceed. The documents required can vary by project and may include plans, engineering information, energy-rating information, title details or planning information.

Required inspections — During construction, required stage inspections are arranged for the work covered by the permit.

Completion — At the end of the work, the applicable completion documentation may include a Certificate of Final Inspection or an Occupancy Permit, depending on the project.

Do I need a building surveyor for my project in Victoria?

Many building projects require a building permit. The requirements depend on the proposed work, so it is important to confirm the permit pathway before construction begins.

Can my builder appoint a private building surveyor for me?

No. In Victoria, a builder may recommend a private building surveyor, but the owner must make the appointment. You may also use your local council’s municipal building surveyor.

How can I check a building surveyor’s registration?

Use the Victorian Building and Plumbing Commission Practitioner Search to check that a practitioner’s registration is current and relevant to the proposed work.

What inspections may be required?

Is a building surveyor the same as a land surveyor?
